New Delhi: At around 6:30 pm, the atmosphere of Surajkund fair was completely immersed in celebration. Behind the main Chaupal, artists from different countries were carrying out a carnival. Youth, children and families were dancing to the beats of drums and music. There was an atmosphere of light, laughter and activity all around.
Preparations for the cultural evening were in full swing at the Chaupal. People were eagerly waiting for the performance of singer Naveen Punia and stand-up comedian Amit Tandon. Repeatedly, appeals were being made over the loudspeaker for security arrangements and care for children and the elderly. Since it was a holiday, the crowd was bigger than previous days.
Almost every swing in the amusement park towards Delhi Gate was full. People were enjoying the thrill. The biggest crowd was on the 'Hammer' swing, which is considered to be the most dangerous and thrilling ride of the park. There were about 30 people in it. The swing was rotating 180 degrees and the riders were enjoying the thrill while screaming and laughing.
But this happiness did not last long. After completion of about 13 rounds, at the beginning of the 14th round, the hammer swing suddenly broke from the left side. The whole atmosphere changed in a moment. There was screaming all around. People could not understand what happened. Some started running away in fear, while some started searching for their family members.
The fair administration immediately called an ambulance and the injured were taken to the nearest private hospital. Relief and rescue work was started rapidly so that the situation could be brought under control.
Rahul, who had come with his children from Greater Faridabad, said that his children had been insisting on going on the swing for a long time and their turn was about to come, when the swing collapsed. Shibbu of Zahir Colony said that his friend was sitting in the swing boat, but after the accident, all the rides were stopped immediately.
After the accident, the police evacuated the entire amusement park and closed the entry. Administrative officials including Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Ayush Kumar reached the spot and started investigation. Now it is being ascertained whether the swing broke due to technical fault or due to negligence in safety.
A happy evening turned into one of fear and anxiety in an instant, which will be remembered for a long time by those present.
